Hair loss phenomenon of newborns

Infant hair loss is normal, especially during the first six months of life. This is due to a decrease in the hormone of a baby while still in the womb after birth. Therefore, the baby’s hair is not growing anymore, then, to the telogen stage (stage of recession, hair loss). Please note that if after 6 months, your baby’s hair continues to shed a lot, it is necessary to take him to the doctor. This could be a warning sign of a baby’s nutritional deficiency or health problem.

Hair growth stage

The telogen phase usually passes quickly or occurs simultaneously with hair growth. The color and texture of hair often change. Thanks to the hormones, a baby’s hair may be black or chestnut, thick or thin, sparse, curly, or straight hair. Some children have new hair after 6 months, some children have to be 2-3 years before the complete change

Properly take care of hair for babies

Babies do not need to wash their hair daily. Regular shampooing can remove the natural oils of your scalp and cause hair to dry and fall out. Instead, wash your baby’s hair several times a week with baby shampoos. Be gentle when rubbing a mild shampoo that doesn’t sting infants’ eyes. Rubbing or massaging your baby’s scalp too quickly can make hair follicles tense and break easily.

Comb baby’s hair

Brush your baby’s hair with a soft-bristled toothbrush or a wide-tooth comb after shampooing so that they don’t get entangled or pulled by the hair to hurt them. If your hair is tangled, gently remove it with your hand.

Moisturizing hair

If your baby’s hair is thick, curly, or dry, you need to care for your newborn’s hair by moisturizing it weekly. Find moisturizers that are suitable for your baby’s scalp, such as natural products containing avocado oil, virgin coconut oil, or almond oil. You can also make a moisturizer by mixing almond or virgin olive oil with a few drops of rosemary or lavender oil. Apply a small amount of moisturizer to your hands and gently rub it into your baby’s hair.

When the child has white patches on the head

When children have a plaque on the scalp most likely due to seborrheic dermatitis or eczema (eczema, atopic dermatitis).

Seborrheic dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis appears in the early months as hard, white, or yellow scales on the scalp. However, it is not harmful. Seborrheic dermatitis usually disappears on its own within a few months. Wash your hair more often and gently massage your scalp with a soft brush or massage with a soft towel.

Apply a little coconut oil or olive oil and leave on for 20 – 30 minutes. Then, use a soft brush to gently remove the plaque before shampooing. You mustn’t shave your scalp to remove stains, as this can irritate.

Eczema appears as a red, dry, itchy rash on the scalp. Babies with eczema have very sensitive skin. Eczema usually develops in children from 2 to 6 months of age. In severe cases, illness can make babies uncomfortable and cause dry hair.

If your child has eczema, use a mild, scented soap or shampoo for sensitive skin. To soothe dry skin, use natural oils like coconut oil, jojoba, or lotion. If eczema is severe or widespread, your doctor may recommend a shampoo, cream, and lotion for treatment.
